The Mechanical Design Engineer is responsible for supporting the development of mechanical design, assembly of packaging process conveyor systems, and material handling equipment in accordance with customer and/or Nercon specifications. In this entry-level position, located in Neenah, WI, the Mechanical Design Engineer works closely with the Mechanical Project Engineer and other Nercon team members to prepare clear, complete, and accurate working plans and detail drawings from rough or detailed sketches to produce a full line of custom conveyor equipment to meet customer requirements. The Mechanical Design Engineer shall be able to perform the duties and responsibilities with a low to moderate level of supervision.
Develop the project solution/design meeting the scope, budget, and time-line established, including project change orders.
Interface with the Sales Department to analyze and define project requirements.
Project compliance with all applicable codes and customers.
Generate specifications for and evaluate bids from outside vendors/suppliers and develop the project mechanical Bill of Material.
Interface with the customer to verify project requirements, receive design approval, and participate in Factory Acceptance Testing.
Develop project release to manufacturing package and support the product fabrication and assembly processes.
Participate (as required) in the testing of the finished product and final inspection prior to shipment to the customer.
Actively participate in department-related process improvement projects.
Ability to travel to customer facilities to conduct design review meetings.
Working knowledge of mechanical engineering practices and design concepts.
Ability to develop proficiency in two-dimensional mechanical design using computer-aided design tools, preferably AutoCAD version 2008 or higher. Proficiency in three-dimensional design is a plus.
Proficient in engineering application software (i.e. manufacturer chain-pull calculator).
Proficient in Microsoft Office applications (Outlook, Word, Excel).
Use appropriate problem-solving methods to identify, analyze and solve problems in an engineering environment.
Ability to learn new concepts and design tools; ability to take concepts and develop them into finished products.
Ability to learn Nercon project engineering processes and ERP system.
Ability to read, analyze and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, plant/equipment layout drawings, and governmental regulations.
Communicate design ideas using a variety of communication methods.
Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
Function effectively and productively within a team-focused work group.
Bachelor of Science Degree (BS) in Mechanical Engineering or related field from an accredited college or university or equivalent combination of education and experience. The education or experience must include a good working knowledge of mechanical component design.
