Mechanical Design Engineer

SUMMARY:

The Mechanical Design Engineer is an entry level position and is responsible for supporting the development of the mechanical design of packaging and process conveyor systems and material handling equipment in accordance with Nercon specifications. Mechanical Design Engineers work closely with Mechanical Project Engineers and other Nercon team members to prepare clear, complete, and accurate conveyor system plans. This includes but is not limited to preparing detail drawings from rough or detailed sketches to producing customized conveying equipment solutions, from both standardized Procore product families and custom equipment to meet customer requirements. The Mechanical Design Engineer shall be able to perform the duties and responsibilities with low to moderate level of supervision.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include but are not limited to the following:

Either solely or by directing other project team members:

  • Interface with the Sales and Application Proposal teams to review project requirements, scope and budget.
  • Interface with the customer to verify project requirements, receive design reviews, and participate in Factory Acceptance Testing.
  • Verify project compliance with Nercon and customer supplied specifications.
  • Develop project plans that meet: scope, budget, and timeline, including project change orders.
  • Develop the project design including: plan and elevation views, cross sections, and device detail drawings
  • Generate specifications for and evaluate bids from outside vendors for purchased equipment.
  • Prepare & submit “Review Drawing” documentation for customer review.
  • Develop the project mechanical bill of material (BOM).
  • Develop “Release to Manufacturing” documentation and support the project through the detail engineering, fabrication and assembly processes.
  • Participate (as required) in the testing of the finished product at our Oconto manufacturing facility prior to shipment to customer. 
  • Actively participate in department-related process improvement projects.
  • Ability to manage small projects (≤ $25k) by end of first year, with little supervision.
  • Travel up to 5% to customer facilities to conduct design review meetings.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Working knowledge of mechanical engineering practices and design concepts. 
  • Proficiency in Solidworks 2024 or higher. Proficiency in two-dimensional mechanical design using AutoCAD version 2026 or higher is a plus. 
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret plant/equipment layout drawings, governmental regulations, technical procedures, general business periodicals, and professional journals.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications (Outlook, Word, Excel).
  • Able to use appropriate problem-solving methods to identify, analyze, and solve problems in an engineering environment.
  • Ability to learn new concepts and design tools; ability to take concepts and develop them into finished products.
  • Ability to learn Nercon project engineering process and ERP system.
  • Communicate design ideas using a variety of communication methods.
  • Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry.  Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
  • Function effectively and productively within a team-focused work group.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

Bachelor of Science Degree (BS) in Mechanical Engineering or related field from an accredited college or university with 0-3 years of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience. The education or experience must include a good working knowledge of mechanical component design. Candidates with an Associate Degree will be considered based upon relative industry experience.

Current driver's license with acceptable driving record as defined in Nercon Employee Handbook.
